No More Ugly Upgrades

Gone are the days I used to sit in front of a green screen sweating with fear as a cursor blinked in front of me. The upgrade command seemed to wrap several times around the screen with so many flags, switches and built in hacks that we use to play rock-paper-scissors to see who would hit the enter key and be ultimately responsible for the upgrade. Finally, we used to place a book on the spacebar to prevent the upgrade from going idle during the upgrade

Updated: Docker Monitoring Prometheus + Grafana

It's been almost a year since I started the initial Docker Monitoring project. This project then spawned off into a Docker Prometheus stack shortly after when I discovered the cAdvisor integration. A year is a long time in Open Source Software (OSS) projects. I like to think that OSS projects are measured in dog years as 1 year seems like much longer when looking back on all the versions. Reflecting back to my first commit of the project a lot has changed and improved with Prometheus,

Setting up a Mail Forwarder in Docker

I started my newsletter Five for Friday at the request of a couple readers in order to keep people updated on interesting and hot topics relating to Docker and general interesting tech news. I sent my first few newsletters and was blown away by the engagement analytics of people opening the mails and clicking on the various links. These newsletters are strictly intended to be sent once per week with

What's new in Docker 1.12 Multi-Host and Multi-Container Orchestration built-in Docker Service and Node added to Docker Engine Security is built into Swarm by default New File format -

Docker + Backup = Dockup

Yesterday, I was called out by a colleague after he discovered I was backing up my Docker environments to Amazon S3 with some bash scripts and a crontab entry. This is a working solution but he asked ever so politely why I was not running this in a Docker container? As I buried my head in shame I decided to get cracking and move my backups into a container. He informed me that he started his Docker project recently and was using Tutum's Dockup Docker + Backup

Great Day to Be Alive

Playing American Football growing up I had a coach which was a bit looney. Actually, all of my coaches were a bit crazy but this one was king of the crazies. Before the start of every practice he would yell at the top of his lungs "It's a Great Day to Be Alive in Phoenix, Arizona". He did this regardless of the near surface of the sun like summer temperatures Arizona produce while the entire team would moan in dismay. He would enthusiastically bounce around practice
